¿Cuántas bandas ha creado la humanidad? ¿Habrá más bandas que estrellas en el cosmos? Ante ambas preguntas, la vida se hace corta para poder aterrizar una respuesta certera, sin embargo, a ratos se tiene acceso a un material debutante que deslumbra. Así, desde Barcelona, aparece un trío que encuentra la forma de sonar como sexteto de viejos maestros.​

El debut de la banda española Decimals es un prometedor punto de partida para el desarrollo del space-metal. Decimals no olvida su género materno, así que sin ningún inconveniente saben reconocer características que se mantienen a lo largo del disco. Con eso, Decimals logran edificar una construcción que es mucho más que música, es una visión, un concepto, un grito que atraviesa el imaginario creativo del fundamento del álbum. Decimals logra que su debut, Symmetry suene cinematográfico, recurso que es altamente necesario al comunicar un concepto durante nueve pistas, una visión sobre el espacio y sus universos paralelos.

El disco abre con “NGC6611”. Lo que parecía una introducción de contemplativa calma, gira en 180 grados producto del huracán rítmico de la batería, cuyo intérprete pareciera tener dos ametralladoras en vez de piernas, que compiten por ver quién ejecuta más disparos en el bombo. Una demoledora declaración de intenciones que es la antesala de todo lo que viene.

“Signals” comienza con lo que aparenta ser un ágil mensaje enviado desde algún lugar lejos de toda vida probable. Parte de su riff base juega con aquellos cromatismos que adornan un ascenso o descenso de la dinámica guitarrística. Un arpegio nostálgico da la partida en “Cryptic existence”, que presenta una textura infinitamente más suave respecto a todo el disco. Decimals genera pasajes de guitarras con reverb que no ahorran en decay y que generan una explanada imaginaria de observación espacial que es acompañada por el timbre de una guitarra clásica insinuando matices flamencos.

Los beep beep inciales de “Atlas”, son adoptados por todo Decimals, haciendo que se remarque lo poderoso de atacar al mismo tiempo las figuras. Luego se las ingenian por colocar un tranquilo puente con los rasgos flamencos escuchados en el tema anterior. A estas alturas la banda demuestra un doctorado en combinar agógicas y expresiones.

Las amantes de los bajos protagónicos en secciones introductorias gustarán de “Keep safe from the rain”, dónde Decimals sigue haciendo gala del dominio de intercalar poderosos riffs con secciones melodiosas sin distorsión. A la mitad del track comienza otra canción parecida, como si se disfrutara de un mismo paisaje, pero desde otra ventana de la nave espacial.

“Redemption” es un collage ensamblado en base al concepto general que funciona bien en conjunto y por separado, suena grande, épico, con barridos que se zambullen en un mar ansioso de vértigo.
Un bajo amenazante siembra sensaciones de algo grande, en eso, aparece una línea de guitarra que no se guarda nada y que a ratos se siente con influencias de Tool. “Self Reflection” se escucha agresivo y amenazante, listo para ser recorrido.

“Beyond the gate” es el penúltimo portal antes de cruzar al final. Ni muy pesada ni muy suave, este track hace disfrutar a los más asiduos a Joe Satriani .El epílogo del disco es “Echo”, una buena síntesis de todo lo escuchado en el disco. Las guitarras se mezclan con pads y arpegiadores ascendentes que logran mantener la atención del oyente. Es un camino nuevo en el que Decimals apuesta por muchas guitarras en escena. El tema llega a su final con una hermosa línea de bajo seguida de un ritmo de batería que aparece salpicando las ultimas palpitaciones de una bestia cansada de viajar y que finalmente asume un descanso.

Decimals regala un disco que explora otras sonoridades del metal. Puede resultar ser un disco pesado para los que no estén acostumbrados al estilo, pero finalmente, el tiempo siempre es un factor importante en descubrir elementos y aquí no es la excepción, ya que, si el oyente deja que la obra se desarrolle en su totalidad, la terminará valorando.

The debut of the Spanish band Decimals, is a promising starting point for the development of space-metal. Decimals does not forget their maternal genre, so without any inconvenience they know how to recognize features that are maintained throughout the álbum. With these features, Decimals manage to build a construction that is much more than music, it is a vision, a concept, a cry that crosses the creative imaginary of the album’s foundation. In this way, in some parts, Decimals makes Symmetry sound cinematic, a resource that is highly necessary for comunicate the concept of the album for nine tracks.

«NGC6611» is the open track of this album. What seemed like an intro of contemplative calm, turns 180 degrees as a result of the rhythmic hurricane of the drums, whose performer seems to have two machine guns instead of legs, competing to see who can fire the most shots on the bass drum. A devastating intent statement that has parts more smoother and that is the prelude to everything that comes after.

«Signals» begins with what appears to be a streamlined message sent from somewhere far. Part of its base riff plays with those chromaticisms that adorn an ascent or descent of the guitar dynamics.

A nostalgic arpeggio kicks off “Cryptic existence”, which has an infinitely softer texture than the entire record. Guitar passages with reverb that do not save on decay, generate an imaginary space landscape observation point that is accompanied by the timbre of a classical guitar hinting at some flamenco nuances.

The starting beeps of Atlas are adopted by Decimals, highlighting how powerful it is to attack the same figures at the same time. Then they manage to put up a quiet bridge with flamenco features. By now, the band has already demonstrated a PhD in combining dynamics and expressions.

People who love star bass lines in introductory sections will like “Keep safe from the rain,” where Decimals continues to show off his mastery of interleaving powerful riffs with melodious sections without distortion. Halfway through the track, another song begins, similar but not the same, as if enjoying the same landscape but from another window of the spaceship.

«Redemption» contains small songs in between, it is a collage assembled based on the general concept that works well together and separately, it sounds big, epic, with sweeps that plunge into an eager sea of ​​vértigo.

A threatening bass line plant feelings that something great is coming and yes, a guitar line appears that does not save anything and it feels influenced by Tool. “Self Reflection” sounds aggressive and threatening, ready to be toured.

«Beyond the gate» is one of the last portal before crossing at the end. Neither too heavy nor too smooth, this track makes fans of Satriani enjoy, without a doubt. The longer album song is Echo, the epilogue. It feels like a good synthesis of everything heard in the previous songs. Guitars are mixed with synths armed with rising arpeggiators that manage to keep the listener’s attention. Its a new path and the senses are open to what happens next, and it happens that Decimals has decided not to save any guitar phrases, since there seem to be at least three playing at the same time. The song comes to an end with a beautiful bass line followed by a drum beat that appears sprinkling the last beats of a travel-weary beast finally taking a break.

Decimals give away an album that explores other metal sounds and adds new motivations to the style. It can turn out to be a heavy album for those who are not used to the style, but finally, time is always an important factor in discovering new elements and here it is no exception, since, if the listener lets the work develop, will end up valuing it.
