En estos tiempos convulsionados y llenos de incertidumbre, si usted está buscando música que evoque esperanza, cierto grado de optimismo, alegría pura o, por lo menos, ese relajo que uno siente en días de vacaciones, “Wild Loneliness” podría ser lo que buscaba.

La última entrega de Superchunk, banda formada en Carolina del Norte hace más de 30 años, tiene esas características. Escucharlo por primera vez colma de esperanza. Esa es la primera sensación. Y, además, podría ser la puerta de entrada a toda la discografía del grupo, si es que usted si encontró con ellos por esas casualidades de la vida y, claro está, se anima a ello.

Es cierto que los últimos años han sido especiales y extraños, una mezcla de sensaciones. Las 10 canciones que conforman “Wild Loneliness” son un reflejo fiel de las emociones y vaivenes que ha enfrentado el mundo, ya sea desde la perspectiva del encierro o las secuelas que ha dejado o dejará la pandemia en su vida aquí y hacia el futuro.

También es cierto que Superchunk va en busca de nuevos caminos, tal como lo ha hecho en otras ocasiones a lo largo de su discografía. “What a Time to Be Alive”, anterior álbum de 2018, estaba en una vereda más cruda y potente, marcada por la época de Donald Trump como presidente de Estados Unidos. Ahora, en cambio, el aura es más suave, cargado a las melodías armónicas, de más fácil digestión. Pero ¡atención! a pesar de la frescura sonora, las letras tratan temáticas diversas, no siempre optimistas y alegres. Explicado de otra manera, no cae en la relación “música positiva-letras negativas”, elemento utilizado muchas veces a lo largo de la historia.

Otro elemento en favor del álbum es la sinergia de sus integrantes. Mac McCaughan en guitarra y voz, el guitarrista Jim Wilbur, la bajista Laura Ballance y el baterista John Wurster suenan cohesionados, pero sin perder la frescura. Si a esto se agregan los aportes de diversos músicos (Mike Mills de REM es uno) la propuesta de Superchunk se fortalece.

Así, el disco avanza y sin darse cuenta, el oyente llega a “If you’re not Dark”, el track final. Antes pasaron, por ejemplo, “Black Summer”, un single con pasta de himno, el gancho perfecto para adentrarse para siempre en Superchunk; “Set it aside”, con sutiles guiños a la escuela de Bruce Springsteen; “On the Floor”, “Highly Suspect”, pista en que juegan muchos sonidos y aparecen hasta vientos o la rockera “Refracting”, que entrega la dosis justa de potencia en medio de la calma imperante.

Si usted no conoce nada de Superchunk, “Wild Loneliness” es recomendable y podría ser una puerta grandiosa para descubrirlos (se llevará más de alguna sorpresa). En cambio, si usted ya los conoce, podría ser doblemente recomendable porque le entregará otro matiz a la opinión que tenga de la banda. De todas maneras, y aunque recién estemos en marzo, es uno de los trabajos destacados del año en curso confirmado que Superchunk está más vigente que nunca.

In these tumultuous and uncertain times, if you are looking for music that evokes hope, a certain degree of optimism, pure joy or, at least, that relaxation that one feels on vacation days, “Wild Loneliness” could be what you were looking for.

The latest installment of Superchunk, a band formed in North Carolina more than 30 years ago, has those characteristics. Hearing it for the first time fills with hope. That is the first feeling. And, furthermore, it could be the gateway to the entire discography of the group, if you did find them by those coincidences of life and, of course, you are encouraged to do so.

It is true that the last few years have been special and strange, a mixture of sensations. The 10 songs that make up “Wild Loneliness” are a faithful reflection of the emotions and ups and downs that the world has faced, either from the perspective of the confinement or the consequences that the pandemic has left or will leave on your life here and in the future.

It is also true that Superchunk is looking for new paths, just as it has done on other occasions throughout its discography. “What a Time to Be Alive”, the previous album from 2018, was on a more raw and powerful path, marked by the time of Donald Trump as president of the United States. Now, on the other hand, the aura is softer, loaded with harmonic melodies, easier to digest. But attention! despite the sound freshness, the lyrics deal with diverse themes, not always optimistic and cheerful. Explained in another way, it does not fall into the “positive music-negative lyrics” relationship, an element used many times throughout history.

Another element in favor of the album is the synergy of its members. Mac McCaughan on guitar and vocals, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance and drummer John Wurster sound cohesive, but without losing freshness. If the contributions of various musicians are added to this (Mike Mills of REM is one), Superchunk’s proposal is strengthened.

Thus, the album advances and without realizing it, the listener arrives at «If you’re not Dark», the final track. Before, for example, they played “Black Summer”, a single with an anthem paste, the perfect hook to enter Superchunk forever; “Set it aside”, with subtle nods to the school of Bruce Springsteen; “On the Floor”, “Highly Suspect”, a track in which many sounds play and even winds appear or the rocker “Refracting”, which delivers the right dose of power in the midst of the prevailing calm.

If you don’t know anything about Superchunk, “Wild Loneliness” is recommended and could be a great door to discover them (it will take more than a few surprises). On the other hand, if you already know them, it could be doubly recommended because it will give another nuance to your opinion of the band. In any case, and although we are only in March, it is one of the outstanding works of the current year, confirming that Superchunk is more relevant than ever.
