Came the day. On October 1 at 12:01 a.m., the new Explosions in the Sky material was released on the most used streaming platforms, putting an end to waiting, since 2016 the band had not announced a new production in its discography that feeds thousands of fans all over the world. The quartet (live quintet) adds an album that was actually composed as an OST for a public television documentary in the state of Texas, the home state of Explosions in the sky, called “Big Bend: The wild frontier of Texas”, whose context is the valuation and visibility of the national park of the same name. In that sense, implicitly, the band takes an environmental stance regarding green policies in a period of climate change that affects the entire planet equally, which is quite a combative artistic move compared to many other bands that are silent.

Although this album can be taken as part of the Explosions in the Sky discography, it is advisable to think about it within the audiovisual proposal of the documentary, which by the way is as beautiful as the OST. The processes of creating an album and an OST are similar, but not the same, therefore, the listener who is used to the historical sound of Explosions in the Sky may find some surprises typical of musical poiesis.

This OST is made up of twenty hits that in total add up to almost an hour lenght and that fit perfectly in each section of the documentary. The work has several sections that can work perfectly without the need to see the audiovisual complement, but seeing it magnifies that substance that only Explosions in the Sky is capable of creating.
The band goes through several styles in order to set the television proposal well, therefore, there are songs that border on indie-folk like “Chisos”, the track that opens the album and where the band makes use of the acoustic guitar timbre for the first time in his discography. This timbre is repeated in songs like “Climbing Bear”, “Woodpecker”, “Camouflage”, “Swimming”, “Sunrise”, “Big Horns”, “Cubs” and it is a sound property that suits the band very well, that hooks up with the classic guitar lines of Explosions in the Sky.

There are other songs that are within the most common sound of the group such as “Nightfall”, which accompanies a scene with a focus on a starry night taking as a reference a fixed point that leaves visible the movement of the spatial time lapse, letting out a wink at Interstellar; and also “Sunrise”, a track that has those delay-laden guitar strums so recognizable in the band.

In the production there is space for soundscapes full of environments and impressions where Explosions in the Sky apparently makes use of mimesis to soundly approximate the changes in natural light of open field scenes that reflect wild landscapes of mountains, hills, etc. desert meadows with all their flora and fauna coexisting, an image that shocks the listener, the seer and certainly the composers.

It also happens that Explosions in the Sky dares to musicalize the concept of the four seasons: “Autumn”, “Winter”, “Spring” and “Summer”. In these themes, the group carries the description of images with atmospheric subtlety in order not to load with sound elements an image that is already beautiful and is magnified with music, making the stationary concept no longer only belongs to Vivaldi.

With this album Explosions in the Sky graduates (or confirms) with a doctorate in musicalization of concepts, landscapes and situations, making a documentary more attractive that allows to value and take care of the few natural parks that remain around a world overexploited by industrialization and the constant siege to the environment that still resists, that still embraces and that is still the only place that has Explosions in the Sky. Hopefully the Texas quartet can return to Chile in the not-so-distant future to listen these brilliant compositions in outdoor, far from the pandemic and far from the concrete jun
