La Última Piedra viene desde el 2017 apañándoselas con su rock alternativo que recoge en partes iguales las herencias de la explosión guitarrera latina en los noventas y tintes de blues sentimental. Su primer esfuerzo, un EP lanzado el año pasado y titulado simplemente ‘Vol.1’, les dio algo de visibilidad como una banda que se acoge a la melancolía, la nostalgia y una que otra intención de evocar sensibilidades comunes.

El nuevo EP llega con el punto destacado del single “Dando Vueltas” que, además de bautizar el lanzamiento, encapsula el espíritu de esta joven banda: melodía, dinamismo, versatilidad y sin ánimos de pretender o alumbrar. Probablemente, una canción que más de alguna vez te vas a encontrar escuchándola mientras caminas o das una vuelta por ahí.

La característica y profunda voz de Cristóbal José es lo que más resalta a la primera escucha; una mezcla entre el carisma de Beto Cuevas en sus mejores años y los ecos potentes del lado más ameno del grunge. Pero el cuarteto de Santiago funciona y suena bien afiatado, más o menos pulido con la misma piedra. “Volvamos” y “Encuentros” muestran su faceta bluesera, espiritual, con letras de alta carga poética; una melosa sensualidad afirmada por la melancolía roída hasta el hueso. Nicolás Müller (guitarra) viene a ser el encargado de trazar estos paseos de nostalgia bruta con sus composiciones y adornos en las seis cuerdas, que van más allá de lo que podría ser algo simple o flojo (anótese con “Hoy”). Claudio Pizarro (bajo) y Nicolás Alvarado (batería) no se quedan atrás y en “Fénix” son los guías de esta canción instintiva y con un impulso natural, diseñada para una carretera larga y con harto sol.

En fin, para La Última Piedra la idea es contar historias convencionales a través de canciones desvestidas de cualquier pretensión o historias en las que cada persona pueda identificarse. La tentación de caer en una melancolía o nostalgia barata se difumina y la banda encuentra una voz propia en la cual confiar. Aparentemente, desde su ‘Vol. 1’ encontraron una ruta que les acomoda; no solo es intentar hacerse de un espacio mediante el formato dosificado y condensado del EP – algo tan popular hoy en día que, a veces, se diluye un poco su sentido. Los chicos ya tienen sus cartas sobre la mesa y la estrategia armada. Ahora solo les queda seguir jugando e innovando y no perderse dando demasiadas vueltas.

La Última Piedra are since 2017 crafting their alternative rock that collects, in equal parts, the inheritances of the Latin guitar explosion in the nineties and overtones of bloody, bluesy sentimentality. Their first effort, an EP released last year and simply titled ‘Vol.1’, gave them some visibility as a band that embraces melancholy, nostalgia, and the occasional intention of evoking common-ground sensibilities.

This new EP comes with the highlight of the single “Dando Vueltas” which, in addition to baptizing the release, encapsulates the spirit of this young band: melody, dynamism, versatility and no desire of pretending something superfluous. Probably a song that more than once you will find yourself listening to it while you go for walk or wander around.

The characteristic and deep voice of Cristóbal José is what stands out the most at first listening; a mix between the charisma of Beto Cuevas in his best years and the powerful echoes of grungy vocals. But this Santiago quartet works and sounds well sharpened, polished with the same stone. “Volvamos” and “Encuentros” draws heavily from a bluesy contemplative sound, a spiritual facet, with lyrics of highly poetic performance; a mellow sensuality grounded on a melancholy muscle gnawed to the bone. Nicolás Müller (guitar) comes to oversee the tracing of these brides of nostalgia with his compositions and decorations on the six strings, which go beyond of what could be something simple or lazy (note “Hoy”). Claudio Pizarro (bass) and Nicolás Alvarado (drums) are not far behind and in “Fénix” they are the guides of this instinctive song with a natural impulse, designed for a long and sunny road.

For La Última Piedra the idea is to tell conventional stories through songs stripped of any pretentious standpoint or stories in which each person can identify. The temptation to fall into melancholy or cheap nostalgia fades and the band finds a voice of their own to trust. Apparently, from their ‘Vol. 1’ they found a route that suits them; it is not just trying to make a place for themselves through the EP’s condensed and dosed format – something so popular today that sometimes its meaning is somewhat diluted. The boys already have their cards on the table and the strategy sorted out. Now they only must keep playing and innovating, so as not to get lost going around too much.
