En su primer disco homónimo (2015) y posterior EP Melaniña (2018), Maff exploró los nuevos bríos del shoegaze y noise pop. Estos trabajos fueron influidos por la escuela anglosajona del estilo e incluían ecos a referentes como My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, The Jesus and Mary Chain o el álbum Distortion, de The Magnetic Fields.

En este segundo álbum de estudio, Kriyam, el sonido de Maff da un giro en 180 grados. Atrás quedaron los muros de distorsión. Ahora, la banda pisa el freno hacia un mundo musical más íntimo y ambiental para optar por un estilo cercano al post rock e indie cerebral de los años noventa.

El disco se compone de seis canciones instrumentales que forman un acróstico de su título. El tema de apertura, «K», abre la puerta hacia un sonido nítido que inmediatamente despliega un aura cautivante. Las resonancias frescas de Maff construyen un ambiente cálido y vigorizante, pero de una forma distinta a la de sus trabajos anteriores.

«R» e «I» seducen con su alma reflexiva y melancólica, en la que priman las melodías y expansiones vocales. Las voces son sutiles, atmosféricas, sin pretensiones de protagonismo alguno.

A medida que el disco avanza, aparecen con delicadeza nuevos motivos que complejizan la música elaborada por Maff. En «Y» se revelan ecos a agrupaciones como The Sea and Cake o los chilenos de Congelador.

Si bien pareciera que Kriyam está atravesado por una aparente simpleza instrumental, la ambientación orquestada por la banda devela un ánimo de innovación. «M», el tema que cierra el álbum, introduce una exquisita mezcla entre dub y post rock, con un sample al mítico discurso «I Have a Dream» de Martin Luther King Jr. 

Este segundo álbum de Maff deja atrás el empuje del noise pop, pero lo hace en favor de algo que revela una faceta mucho más matizada de su sonido. Kriyam es un lanzamiento que invita a una introspección en un entorno musical sincero. Un acierto para una banda honesta que, sin pretensiones ni aspavientos, logra crear paisajes conmovedores.

On their debut self-titled album (2015) and later EP Melaniña (2018), Santiago-based outfit Maff explored the new verve of shoegaze and noise pop. These works were influenced by the Anglo-Saxon school of the style and included echoes of references such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, The Jesus and Mary Chain or the album Distortion, by The Magnetic Fields.

On this second studio album, Kriyam, Maff’s sound takes a 180 degree turn. Gone are the distortion walls. Now, the band is stepping on the brakes towards a more intimate and ambient musical world to opt for a style closer to post rock and the cerebral indie of the nineties.

The album is made up of six instrumental songs that form an acrostic for its title. The opening track, «K», opens the door to a crisp sound that immediately displays a captivating aura. Maff’s fresh resonances build a warm and invigorating atmosphere, but in a different way than his previous works.

«R» and «I» seduce with their reflective and melancholic soul, in which melodies and vocal expansions prevail. The voices are subtle, atmospheric, without any pretense of prominence.

As the album progresses, new motifs appear delicately that complicate the music produced by Maff. In «Y» echoes of groups such as The Sea and Cake or the Chileans of Congelador are revealed.

Although it seems that Kriyam is crossed by an apparent instrumental simplicity, the atmosphere orchestrated by the band reveals a spirit of innovation. «M», the song that closes the album, introduces an exquisite mix between dub and post rock, with a sample of the legendary speech «I Have a Dream» by Martin Luther King Jr.

This second Maff album leaves behind the thrust of noise pop, but does so in favor of something that reveals a much more nuanced side to their sound. Kriyam is a release that invites introspection in a sincere musical setting. A success for an honest band that, without pretensions or fuss, manages to create moving landscapes.
