El encierro y la soledad como catalizadores creativos, fueron y son usados en la música al momento de aterrizar ideas o crear otras nuevas, es así que el desarrollo del arte en general, dentro del contexto pandémico, nunca mermó incluso teniendo todo en contra es este país. Es desde ahí donde surge “Demeter ” de la banda nacional On the Road To Jericho, un proyecto cuyo único integrante es Fabián Escudero y en donde se hace cargo de todas las labores de producción.

On the Road to Jericho plantea en este EP un repaso de características típicas, pero siempre disfrutables, del postrock sumando también variables de los estilos ambient y drone que se desarrollan a lo largo de su casi media hora de duración dividida en tres canciones: Chincol, Penumbra y Demeter. A diferencia de las otras dos producciones anteriores, esta vez las canciones tienen nombres dentro del vocablo nacional, lo cual puede ayudar a recordar los títulos de cada una de estas creaciones.

Los primeros días del encierro obligatorio dejaron a mucha gente desorientada pasando gran parte del tiempo en sus hogares a merced de la frustración, del aburrimiento, de la sensación de ser privados de libertad. Muchos buscaron consuelo en las ventanas, viendo como las ciudades parecían detenerse, pensando en que hacer o que no hacer y resulta casi brutal no sentir envidia de las aves a vuelo libre por cada espacio. Así se siente “Chincol”, el track que eligió On The Road To Jericho como apertura del disco. Una canción que desarrolla sentimientos ya descritos con la salvedad de que no se siente negativa, al contrario, es un respiro melódico y pausado, bien conducido por el vuelo de un ave proyectada desde el imaginario del compositor. No es el ave que se mira por la ventana, es la imagen que se tiene de ella en la mente lo que permite generar el arranque de esta canción compuesta por varias secciones, donde conviven los instrumentos tradicionales sin grandes líneas, pero si con mucho poder expresivo de la suma de todos ellos. La distorsión de una de las guitarras pareciera emular la brisa que enviste constantemente a cualquier ave en pleno aleteo. Más que un tema para escuchar, es un emotivo episodio de libertad para sentir.

“Penumbra” es la canción que está en medio de dos extensas composiciones. Quizás existan personas que lo vean como un intermedio, pero eso no sería justo para las emociones que abriga un tema que en base al minimalismo ambient, construye una percepción de la penumbra lejos del significado más oscuro de la palabra. On the Road to Jericho imagina un destello constante de sonidos y luces que evocan imágenes nostálgicas encontradas en una calma introspectiva. Jamás una penumbra se sintió tan luminosa como para necesitar volver a ella una y otra vez.

El EP cierra con la canción que le da el nombre al disco, Demeter, la diosa madre en la mitología griega, responsable de las estaciones y la cosecha. Atando algunas especulaciones, es posible sentir que parte del imaginario que llevó a On The Road to Jericho a componer este disco fueron las propias percepciones del avance de las estaciones a través de una ventana, casi como mirar el mundo a través de un telescopio en la seguridad y monotonía de un dormitorio. Desde esa perspectiva, On the road To Jericho construye un tema que parte con poquitos elementos pero que suma más y más capas de música a lo largo de su extensión, como si el autor quisiera describir sonoramente hasta el más mínimo detalle que refleja el sentir de un alma tras los vaivenes estacionales. Las ideas rítmicas iniciales tienen figuras cortas que ayudan a crear un equilibrio entre las líneas melódicas con notas más largas, siempre acompañadas con pads que pintan el fondo como si fuera una acuarela sonora.

On the Road to Jericho regala un momento sonoro para visitar y revisitar, las veces que sean necesarias, esas emociones gestadas en medio de un momento histórico que pese a todo quedarán arraigadas en la sensibilidad de los compositores y auditores. Sin duda una pieza musical que no puede faltar a la hora de retratar la creación cómo método constructivo para calmar océanos de ansiedad.

Confinement and loneliness as creative catalysts, were and are used in music at the time of landing ideas or creating new ones, so the development of art in general, within the pandemic context, never diminished even with everything against it on this country. It is from there where “Demeter EP” of the national band On the Road To Jericho arises, a project whose only member is Fabián Escudero and where he is in charge of all the production tasks.

On the Road to Jericho presents in this EP a review of typical characteristics of the postrock, also adding variables of the ambient and drone styles that are developed throughout its almost half-hour duration divided into three songs: Chincol, Penumbra and Demeter. Unlike the other two previous productions, this time the songs have names within the national word which can help to remember the titles of each of these creations.

The first days of quarantine left many people disoriented, spending much of their time at home at the mercy of frustration, boredom, the feeling of being deprived of liberty. Many looked for comfort in windows, seeing how the cities seemed to stop, thinking about what to do or what not to do and it is almost brutal not to feel envy of the birds in free flight in each space. This is how “Chincol” feels, the track that On The Road To Jericho chose as the opening of the album. A song that develops feelings already described with the exception that it does not feel negative, on the contrary, it is a melodic and leisurely respite, well led by the flight of a bird projected from the composer’s imagination. It is not the bird that looks out the window, it is the image that one has of it in the mind that allows to generate the start of this song composed of several sections, where traditional instruments coexist without large lines, but with a lot of power expressive of the sum of all of them. The distortion of one of the guitars seems to emulate the breeze that constantly blows any bird in full flapping. More than a song to listen to, it is an emotional episode of freedom to feel.

«Penumbra» is the song in the middle of two long compositions. Perhaps there are people who see it as an interlude, but that would not be fair to the emotions that a song harbors that, based on ambient minimalism, builds a perception of the gloom away from the darkest meaning of the word. On the Road to Jericho imagines a constant flash of sounds and lights that evoke nostalgic images found in an introspective calm. Never has a gloom felt so bright as to need to return to it again and again.

The EP closes with the song that gives the album its name, Demeter, the mother goddess in Greek mythology, responsible for the seasons and the harvest. Tying up some speculations, it is possible to feel that part of the imaginary that led On The Road to Jericho to compose this album were the perceptions of the advance of the seasons through a window, almost like looking at the world through a telescope in the security and monotony of a bedroom. From that perspective On the road To Jericho builds a track that starts with a few elements but adds more and more layers of music throughout its length, as if the author wanted to describe sonically even the smallest detail that reflects the feeling of a soul after the seasonal ups and downs. The initial rhythmic ideas have short figures that help to create a balance between the melodic lines with longer notes, always accompanied by pads that paint the background as if it were a sound watercolor.

On the Road to Jericho gives a sound moment to visit and revisit, as many times as necessary, those emotions developed in the midst of a historical moment that, despite everything, will remain rooted in the sensitivity of composers and auditors. Without a doubt, a piece of music that cannot be missed when portraying creation as a constructive method to calm oceans of anxiety.
