Vinnie Low: Bestiario (2018) (English)

“La locura ya volvió, el silencio se escondió”(Madness has returned, the silence hid itself), is sung with force by Raimundo Díaz (vocalist) in the song Tu Locura, making clear what Vinnie Low’s first EP Bestiario proposes: Exuberance, attitude, high decibels and an energy that will pump your blood.

In a time where the word “Rock” is frequently put into question, Vinnie Low takes its listeners back to its core with powerful guitar riffs, intransigent rock-hard drumming and power-injected bass guitar that seems to be about to escape the speakers and begin throwing punches.

In their first record, Vinnie Low delivers a bunch of ferocious songs that look back to the nineties with no nostalgia, with a sound that is at times reminiscing of Soundgarden as well as posterior referents such as Mastodon.

The song that opens the EP Beber, Fumar, is an excellent opener for skull-bashing, with a guitar riff that rambles between the power of nineties hard rock and the trance of the likes of Black Sabbath; the beginning, which is made to shake the ground, is impulsed by the giant bass of Nicolás Grisanti; while the hypnotic ending destroys itself little by little by the hand of Carlos Valderrama’s guitar. Tu Locura, the second song, deals with intensities in an excellent way; it grows layer by layer as the bass and the drums take control of the verse, leading the way to explode into a strong and solid chorus, before a scary solo filled with wah shows up.

In the third song, Viejo Placer, the band shows a more stoner side, with a slow and heavy rhythm produced by Daniel Martin (drummer), the guitar makes a choked riff that blends in perfectly with Raimundo Diaz’s voice, who makes justice to the teachings of the great grunge singers. The fourth song, Lejos de Esta Canción, advocates hysteria with a coordinated guitar and bass, stretching all tension before releasing it in an epic solo. Caes del Cielo was the first song the band presented as a single, and it’s perfect song to end the EP: it’s ferocious, hypnotic and ends the energic ride with a strong taste of that stoner rock that Vinnie Low preaches like a sacred mantra.

Heavy riffs, overwhelming rhythms to headbang to until it hurts and melodies you can sing along to are the biggest elements that this ensemble of beasts Vinnie Low uses to rise the flag of the rebel guitar wielding, torn throat packed, old and cursed rock and roll. It’s a good record to listen to when feeling in need of some Rock, with a capital R.
