Desde Buenos Aires, Argentina, un trío de amigos aparece aferrándose al mathrock más puro, haciéndolo sonar actual, fresco y agregando líricas, algo no tan visto en el estilo. Así se siente “CiberUtopía” de la banda YON, su tercer lanzamiento y el primero en ser editado en Chile gracias al sello de música experimental LeRock Psicophonique.

YON nutre su música de diferentes vertientes, entre las cuales pueden encontrarse influencias de grandes bandas expertas en el género como Don Caballero, Tortoise o Pele. Siguiendo esa línea, aflora un EP que está compuesto por 3 temas originales y 2 remixes que imaginan los temas de forma independiente, manteniendo un base y agregando aspectos que los hacen sentir diferentes, pero parecidos, como mirados desde otra perspectiva.

El EP toma vuelo con “404 (love not found”). Una canción escrita retratando el dolor de una ruptura o en la aceptación de un duelo, aun así, no es una composición que se sienta triste, es más bien un punto de observación de la persona sobreviviente de aquella experiencia. Hay que señalar que es la primera vez que YON escribe una letra para una de sus canciones, hecho que no se nota ya que se siente un buen dominio de este elemento tanto en su contenido como en la forma de llevarlo a buen puerto. Llegando casi al minuto y cuarenta segundos la canción encuentra un cambio en la re-imaginación de la rítmica que viene de la batería, generando la ilusión de un desplazamiento métrico y moviendo el piso rítmico de la canción. Más adelante aparecerá otra excelente mutación, esta vez con todos los instrumentos construyendo frases nuevas y entrando a una zona en donde la voz se toma un descanso.

En “Jpn”, YON comienza con un interesante compás amalgamado de seis y cuatro que trae consigo una idea melódica que hace cabecear en los acentos. Esta idea perfectamente podría ser tocada con distorsiones, golpes más fuertes de batería y sería una reversión numetal de sí misma. El tema agrega vocales como complemento melódico que se dejan escuchar en puntos concretos cuando se retoma la idea del comienzo. Lo que más genera adicción de esta canción son los redobles mensurados de la batería, que dan la sensación de que en algún momento pueden descontrolarse, pero no, es math y es YON, así que todo debe estar donde tiene que estar.

UnaBomb es una canción con algo más de calma, aparentemente, con respecto al resto del disco. Es una creación que deja ver lo bien que se llevan ambas guitarras dialogantes, compartiendo la misma importancia en la construcción de la atmósfera equilibrada que entreteje el tema. Justo antes del final, YON pareciera querer comenzar una canción totalmente distinta, pero, en realidad, es un epilogo extravagante que perfectamente puede conducir a una idea futura o hacer de enlace con otra canción en alguna presentación en vivo.

Jpn remix diluye el dibujo melódico creado por las guitarras y los transforma en un telón de fondo para cambiar la armonía con ayuda de un bajo sintetizado y elementos de música electrónica. Es un remix de la idea de YON con una energía bastante cinética que puede provocar espasmos rítmicos en el cuerpo del oyente.

El remix de 404(love not found) se escucha más ambiental que la composición original. La voz pareciera fundirse con la capa de pads bajo toda la cortina de semi nostalgia que provoca la canción. A ratos aparece ese componente glitchero que se escucha tan bien en la música electrónica y que en esta versión es un detalle soberbio.

Siempre hay que agradecer que bandas trasandinas quieran editar música en nuestro país, especialmente ahora que el consumo de música experimental es bajo en comparación con otro géneros más populares y urbanos. Desde esa perspectiva, se aplaude de pie el coraje que tiene YON y se espera que en algún momento del futuro cercano toquen pisos nacionales para poder vivir sus composiciones con todos los sentidos posibles.

From Buenos Aires, Argentina, three friends appear clinging to the purest mathrock, making it sound current, fresh and adding lyrics, something not so seen in the style. This is how “CiberUtopia” by the band YON feels, their third release and the first to be released in Chile thanks to the experimental music label LeRock Psicophonique.

YON nurtures its music from different aspects, among which can be found influences from great bands that are experts in the genre such as Don Caballero, Tortoise or Pele. Following that line, an EP emerges that is composed of three original songs and two remixes that imagine the songs independently, maintaining a base and adding aspects that make them feel different, but similar, as seen from another perspective.

The EP takes flight with “404 (love not found”). A song written portraying the pain of a breakup or in the acceptance of a grief, even so, it is not a composition that feels sad, it is rather a point of observation of the person who survived that experience. It should be noted that it is the first time that YON has written a letter for one of their songs, a fact that is not noticeable since they feel a good command of this element both in its content and in the way of bringing it to achievement. Arriving at almost one minute and forty seconds, the song finds a change in the re-imagination of the rhythm that comes from the drums, generating the illusion of a metric displacement and moving the rhythmic floor of the song. Later another excellent mutation will appear, this time with all the instruments building new phrases and entering an area where the voice takes a break.

On “Jpn”, YON begins with an interesting amalgamated six and four measure that brings with it a melodic idea that makes the accents nod. This idea could perfectly be played with distortions, louder drum hits and would be a numetal reversal of itself. The theme adds vowels as a melodic complement that are heard at specific points when the idea of the beginning is retaken. The most addictive thing about this song are the measured drum rolls, which give the feeling that at some point they can get out of control, but no, it’s math and it’s YON, so everything has to be where it needs to be.

UnaBomb is a song with a bit more calm, apparently, with respect to the rest of the album. It is a creation that shows how well both dialoguing guitars get along, sharing the same importance in the construction of the balanced atmosphere that interweaves the theme. Right before the end, YON seems to want to start a totally different song, but in reality, it is an outlandish epilogue that can perfectly lead to a future idea or link to another song in a live performance.

Jpn remix dilutes the melodic drawing created by the guitars and transforms them into a backdrop to change the harmony with the help of a synthesized bass and elements of electronic music. It’s a remix of the YON idea with quite kinetic energy that can cause rhythmic spasms in the listener’s body.

The remix of 404 (love not found) sounds more ambient than the original composition. The voice seems to merge with the layer of pads under the whole curtain of semi nostalgia that the song makes. From time to time that glitch component appears that is heard so well in electronic music and that in this version is a superb detail.

We must always be grateful that bands from Argentina want to release music in our country, especially now that the listening of experimental music is low compared to other more popular and urban genres. From that perspective, the courage that YON has is applauded and it is expected that at some point in the near future they will play national floors to be able to experience their compositions with all possible senses.
