Bagual «Nulla» (2017)

As they already said in interviews, it is no secret that at the end of 2016, the future Bagual was uncertain. Felipe Machuca, a great guitarist, leaves the group, setting the doubt if keep going as a band could be an alternative. Something that finally happened, adding Nacho Weiss (Torkana, Kanatran, etc) in guitars, and launching this October in Sala Master their third LP: «Nulla».

As the law of conservation of the matter tells, Bagual (also composed by Julián Hernández as bassist, Alejandro Clavijo on drums and Francisco Yañez in vocals and guitar) took the power and harmony shown in his two previous works (“Viento Sur” and “Viento Norte”), getting over barriers of music style, refreshing, transforming their work. Although «Viento Norte» already had songs that stood out over the “stoner” label («Horizonte de Sucesos”, “Asamblea «), «Nulla» represent a total output of a comfort zone that had them as outstanding exponents of that music style. There is flexibility in this new Bagual, and it is noticeable from the art of the album; formed by lines, very in the Bauhaus style, which form an interpretable figure like the classic bull -present in the artwork from thier previous records-, or like anything else the listener wants to represent.

Undoubtedly, in this album there are brutal sounds from the «past era» (maybe ‘cause the engineering work, was in charge of Eugenio Larraín, as in their previous álbum), but in “Nulla” there are more room  for atmospheric sounds, using the calm as a fearsome weapon. Something that it cand be heard in «Fraters», the first song, which works as a manifesto of where the quartet are today; probably, the song that most resembles his previous works.

And how to talk about Bagual, without touch the vocal harmonies; «Bóveda de Acero», the second song, has three counterpoint voices, each one with its own color, playing between the nuances given by the instruments. «San Sebastián», the third song, narrates in three movements the merciless extermination against the Selknam, Yámanas and Kawésqar people in Tierra del Fuego. Watchout the blastbeat at the end, very appropriate to close a topic that neither in schools, nor in governments, has wanted to teach with the urgency and anger that should.

Near of the middle of the album, «Demian», which until now is the longest track of the band’s career, with long instrumental passages and greats textures, bring us in to the shortest Bagual song so far: «Nulla», an instrumental and highly melodic track that hardly could be categorized as stoner, showing once again the interpretative level the band has.

«Funerales Astrales» the sixth song, where Weiss takes the lead voice, guiding melodically to a band that gives everything of itself. Clearly, the single, kids. Tons of power and quality. Same force given plus two in «Islas Futuras», the most “metal” bagual song that I know’em so far.

«Mares» summarizes a recurring subject in «Nulla»: the relationship of humans with water, with tides, the trip and its effects on the human being. In fact, interpreting the albums, “Viento Sur” was fire, “Viento Norte” was earth, and “Nulla” is that: water, sea, the one ho gives and takes life; the calm and anger, all in equal amount.

Finally, «Blasko Bela», in honor of Bela Lugosi, the original Dracula of the 30s, returns with that slow, lethargic, loaded sound, which Bagual has known grown in 7 years of history. As an ouroboros, always returning to the origin, with a delay in reverse, they close the album with an address by Lugosi himself telling us » listen to the children of the night and the music they do «, and we can only add that, oh, yes, Mr. Dracula, of course we will, of course.
